Lemme put it this way. Tom Dowd was 16-year old working on the Manhattan Project. So he's kinda talented. But after the war he decides to go into the recording business as Ahmet Ertegun's engineering wiz at Atlantic, working with everybody. No, EVERYBODY. Dizzy, Coltrane,Aretha, Cream, The Allman Brothers...the list goes on. He's one of the most significant producers in the history of recorded music.

It was amazing watching him at the console replaying the Derek & The Dominoes Layla sessions master tapes, reviewing the Duane Allman/Eric Clapton guitar interplay. This documentary's fantastic.

Yesterday, we had to say goodbye to our beloved girl Cheese. This photo was taken just a short while before she left us. She was doing great for a 14 year old cat, but on Wednesday, suffered what was probably the sudden onset of the effects of a brain tumor, or a stroke. She was like my shadow, and would frequently sleep with her head on my pillow and wake me up by gently pawing my nose when it was time for her breakfast.

Almost all of us knew her from her days at the Belmont, where she and Oscar listened in on countless Hazel Motes and Humbolts rehearsals. She was probably responsible for a few unfortunate urinary "accidents" involving house guests as well. That was her punk phase I suppose.

We really really miss her.

Some of the lads and I checked out X at Roseland Friday night. Shit, that was the best rock show I've seen in a looong time. Billy Zoom, DJ Bonebreak and John Doe laying it down! They did all my faves from Under the Big Black Sun. Great show, great songs, great punk chicks who are now my age and look it, too. And Tim Robbins got up on stage and sang! I saw him scurrying out the door after the show and had to pat him on the back and thank him for singing. He mumbled something like "Thanks.." and ran off into the night. Stupendous.

(Associated Press) Guitar master Link Wray, the father of the power chord in rock 'n' roll who inspired such legends as Bruce Springsteen, David Bowie and Pete Townshend, has died. He was 76.
Wray died November 5 at his home in Copenhagen, his wife and son said on his Web site. No cause of death was given, but his family said his heart was "getting tired." He was buried November 18 after a service at Copenhagen's Christian Church.
"While playing his guitar he often told the audience, 'God is playing my guitar, I am with God when I play,'" his wife, Olive, and son, Oliver Christian, wrote. "We saw you go with God, you were smiling."
Wray, who played in his trademark leather jacket, developed a style considered the blueprint for heavy metal and punk music. He is best known for his 1958 instrumental "Rumble," 1959 "Rawhide" and 1963 "Jack the Ripper." His music has been featured in movies including "Pulp Fiction," "Independence Day" and "Desperado."
Wray, who was born in North Carolina and is three-quarters Shawnee Indian, is said to have inspired many other rock musicians, including Townshend of the Who, Springsteen, Bowie, Bob Dylan and Steve Van Zandt. All have been quoted as saying that Wray and "Rumble" inspired them to become musicians.
"He is the king; if it hadn't been for Link Wray and 'Rumble,' I would have never picked up a guitar,'" Townshend wrote on one of Wray's albums. Neil Young once said: "If I could go back in time and see any band, it would be Link Wray and the Raymen."
The power chord - a thundering sound created by playing fifths (two notes five notes apart, often with the lower note doubled an octave above) - became a favorite among rock players. Wray claimed because he was too slow to be a whiz on the guitar, he had to invent sounds.
When recording "Rumble," he created the fuzz tone by punching holes in his amplifiers to produce a dark, grumbling sound. It took off instantly, but it was banned by some deejays in big cities for seeming to suggest teen violence.
"I was looking for something that Chet Atkins wasn't doing, that all the jazz kings wasn't doing, that all the country pickers wasn't doing. I was looking for my own sound," Wray told The Associated Press in 2002.
He was born Frederick Lincoln Wray Jr. in 1929 in Dunn, N.C. His two brothers, Vernon and Doug, were also musicians. The three became a country hit as "Lucky Wray and the Palomino Ranch Hands." Later, after "Rumble," they became "Link Wray and the Raymen," or Wraymen, as it was sometimes spelled. Later, the brothers' relationship soured after a dispute about the rights to "Rumble."
In 1978, he moved to Denmark and married Olive Julie Povlsen. They raised their son in a three-story house on an island where Hans Christian Andersen once lived.
Though he went out of style in the '60s, he was rediscovered by later generations. He toured the United States and Canada since the mid-1990s, playing 40 shows this year. In 2002, Guitar World magazine elected Wray one of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time.

-- Even though they're chemically similar, marijuana smoke is less likely than tobacco smoke to cause cancer, according to one expert review of the literature.

The review, by Dr. Robert Melamede of the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, noted that tobacco and marijuana smoke differ in a number of ways, particularly in the fact that marijuana smoke contains tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) , while tobacco smoke contains nicotine. Nicotine increases the cancer-promoting effects of smoke, while THC reduces those effects, he explained.

And even though THC and nicotine act on related cellular pathways, they bind to different receptors to activate these pathways, the review found. Cells in the lungs and respiratory passages are lined with nicotine receptors but these cells don't appear to have THC receptors. This may explain why smoking marijuana has so far not been linked with lung cancer, a major cause of death from cigarette smoking.
Research has also shown that marijuana kills cancer cells and reduces tumor growth. This is, in part, because marijuana reduces the formation of blood vessels that nourish tumors.

However, the review warned that the effects of marijuana are complex and sometimes contradictory. It also noted that many people use marijuana and tobacco together, and the two drugs may interact in complex ways.

While some governments are reluctant to approve marijuana for medicinal use, the review noted that there's increasing evidence that marijuana can improve the lives of patients with a broad range of health problems, including insomnia, AIDS, multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease.

The review will be published in an upcoming issue of the journal Harm Reduction.

I must say, I picked this link because it amused me, but I spent a mostly sleepless night last night watching the news coverage on TV. It seems to me that the federal government is ill equipped to handle this (and I said so in a letter to my congressional rep, senators and the president). When Eli and Peyton Manning can get 30K lbs of food and baby formula airlifted to New Orleans, and FEMA can't get off their own backsides to authorize trucks and buses to the right place something is SERIOUSLY wrong with this country. Last night Nightline ran a piece on how they are "saving" people from their flooded homes and the helicopters are dropping them in the middle of the interstate (I-10) and these sick, destitute and infirm people are now stranded in the open FOR DAYS! This is SAVING people? Its obvious to me that no one is in charge of this operation. No federal employee is empowered or feels empowered enough to take charge of this, and that is the fault of the current state of the Executive Administration. Junior Congressmen from NY are screaming for Rudy Guliani and Tommy Franks and Dubya has appointed a "committee". This is government by the weak and small minded. This fucking stinks.

Holy Crise! Where's Rudy??! Bush didn't send out ships until Wednesday??! What the fuck? Those ships should have been sent out Sunday night. At least compassionate cities like Houston and San Antonio have stepped up to the plate. But what about the corporations? Like GreyHound can't send a few hundred buses to help bus people to these relief cities??! What the hell?!

I gave some money to the Catholic Relief fund, but it is total madness that Bush can throw ALL our money away on IRAQ and not give a shit about the poor folks (and they are poor) who made the unfortunate choice of waiting out the hurricane. These folks paid taxes ALL THEIR LIVES to have no support whatsoever from the govertment.

Bush's first term Morgan Reynolds comments that the official story about the collapse of the WTC is "bogus" and that it is more likely that a controlled demolition destroyed the Twin Towers and adjacent Building No. 7. Reynolds, who also served as director of the Criminal Justice Center at the National Center for Policy Analysis in Dallas and is now professor emeritus at Texas A&M University said, "If demolition destroyed three steel skyscrapers at the World Trade Center on 9/11, then the case for an 'inside job' and a government attack on America would be compelling." Reynolds commented from his Texas A&M office, "It is hard to exaggerate the importance of a scientific debate over the cause of the collapse of the twin towers and building 7. If the official wisdom on the collapses is wrong, as I believe it is, then policy based on such erroneous engineering analysis is not likely to be correct either. The government's collapse theory is highly vulnerable on its own terms. Only professional demolition appears to account for the full range of facts associated with the collapse of the three buildings."

The cuts would slash 25% of the federal funding this year—$100 million—and end funding altogether within two years. Other stations would have to increase corporate sponsorships.

If we can reach 250,000 signatures by the end of the week, we'll put Congress on notice.

A friend sent this to me. I'm not so sure I'm as far left as some of the contributors to this blog. I do pause to think about some of the stuff you guys have posted, and I'm sure at least 50% of the conspiracy stuff and bullshit surrounding the WMDs and run up to war is true. I'm not sure that there is a Star Chamber in the administration, I'm more inclined to think these guys are a bunch of empty suits looking to get theirs while the getting is good.

Well we finally closed the deal & are the proud parents of a 270 year old home. A wonder to behold & a true getaway for those so inclined. House comes complete with its own swim pond, rapids, waterfall, doctor & chef. Plenty of room & just a wee 2 hour jaunt up 87. The Catskills are in bloom & summer is beckoning. Did you guys catch this Metallica doc? I watched it Saturday night on VH1. It's like a true to life Spinal Tap. Basically, Metallica became a big money machine for the record company. There was a bunch of infighting, so the company hired a psychologist to hang out with them over a period of a couple years. Check it out if you have the time. Note: Lars' dad is one scary Dane.

My co-workers and I were walking back to the building from lunch today when the following happened. We saw a woman drop a few things out of her purse while fishing for her identification badge. She was hustling so she must have forgotten to pick up the tube of what looked like toothpaste that was now lying, face down, on the pavement. My buddy, reached down to retrieve the tube and return it to her, and in the process managed to kick it with his foot. This action turned the tube over to reveal.....VAGI-GUARD. We broke out laughing, man that was the best laugh I've had in months. He left the tube where it was, what do you think that woman would have thought if he had actually returned it to her in the lobby of our building?

Big Belly, RUMOR?

So I made the promised trip to Canal and Centre to find Big Belly the trash compaction system and IT WASN'T THERE!! I had intended to place my brown bag in it and photograph it and generally admire, but it seems to be missing. So, I'm now on a hunt to find it. However, in the course of 30 minutes of walking I was able to witness the following list of interesting "only in New Yawk" kind of things.

1) While eating my veggie burger in front of federal court building I eavesdropped on a group of lawyers discussing the merits of some out of court settlement that they had happily arrived at this morning between some woman with a now-broken back and a scaffolding company.

2) I observed an overfed Latina with a stroller pleading with a court officer to tell her where she could find the location that she had been told was "RIGHT HEAH ON LAFFYETTE STREET" for sending cash to Rikers Island.

3) I narrowly missed getting hit by a flying gob that some chinaman on Canal Street launched in my general direction.

4) I was pushed aside by a man who was louldly pronouncing that another man on the street was packing a gun and was intending to shoot him.

5) In the City Hall subway station I walked behind a rather large african american guy tooting on a harmonica and singing "amazing grace" as loud as he could.

6) On the subway I witnessed a struggle between a toddler and his teenage mom for "The Star" magazine, during which the child would reach out for the mag and his mother would quickly slap his hand back with a quick stroke. The toddler was bawling as loud as he could and his little hand was getting redder and redder with each reach and subsequent strike.
